Stephanie Holmquist: Inside Art in Contemporary China

Stephanie Holmquist is a New York-based scholar and collector of Chinese contemporary art, and a co-founder of Centre A. Since the late 1990s she has been integral to numerous projects, institutions and events around the world that have contributed to the intensification of interest in Chinese contemporary art.

Contemporary art from China has seen a near-eightfold increase in the market over the last two years. During their first auction of Chinese contemporary art in New York last April, the amount of telephone bidders exceeded the number of telephones available. In 2005, The Venice Biennale hosted the first official Chinese art pavilion. Clearly, Chinese contemporary art has seized the imagination of the Western art world.

In conjunction with the exhibition House of Oracles: A Huang Yong Ping Retrospective, the Vancouver Art Gallery invites you to join Stephanie Holmquist for a timely discussion on this growth of the contemporary Chinese art scene from a collector's perspective.

The event is free for Centre A members, and free with Gallery admission for non-members.
