You are invited to join us for the 21st edition of Ourtube with host Naufús Ramirez-Figueroa on the controversial topic of Habacuc Guillermo Vargas.

Vargas, a Costa Rican artist, supposedly killed a dog for his show in Managua for the Central American Biennial in 2007. This resulted in thousands of Youtube videos calling for the boycott of Vargas' work, and even the artist's death. In 2008 the case of Habacuc Guillermo Vargas became a viral subject on the Internet, yet most people only know that he "killed" the dog -they don't know the subject of the exhibition or even who the artist is.

The objective of this Ourtube presentation is to provide an overview of Vargas’ art and a context for his controversial 2007 exhibition. Naufús Ramirez-Figueroa will also have a live Skype conversation with Habacuc, providing an opportunity for audience members to ask the artist questions.

Naufús Ramirez-Figueroa obtained a BMA from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, Vancouver/Canada, and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, IL/USA in 2008. He works as a video, installation and performance artist. Ramirez-Figueroa is the son of a former Guerrilla ex-combatant in the Guatemalan Civil War, and his art reflects his childhood of political violence and his experiences as a refugee in Canada. Other important subjects in his work are poetry, folkloricism, queer sexuality, the politics of food, and magical practices. Naufús Ramirez-Figueroa is a recipient of various awards including the 2007 Franklin Furnace Performance Art Fund.

OurTube is Centre A's monthly screening and talking event that's held at Centre A's lounge space on the last Wednesday night of every month after gallery hours. OurTube is a play on "YouTube". The idea behind the project is not only to broadcast your video, but also to share the experience of watching video with others and talking about it.
