For the 19th Ourtube, please join us for a presentation by Vancouver based artist Judy Cheung, who will introduce her on-going interactive project, "Mind of a City - 9 Steps to Happiness". The work project has been featured at various Artist in Residency programs and exhibitions including PKW (Plastic Kinetic Worms) Contemporary Art Space, Singapore, 2007; Helen Pitt Artist Run Centre, Vancouver, 2008; Latitude 53 Contemporary Visual Culture, Edmonton, 2008; ComPeung Village of Creativity, Thailand, 2009; and Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art in Kelowna, 2009.

Initially conceived in 2005, "Mind of a City" explores urban mindscapes in the context of our cultural drives towards "personal fulfillment" and goal-oriented "progression".  Adopting strategies in DIY culture, "Mind of a City" consists of nine interactive workstations that incorporate psychological therapy, game play, sense-of-humour rehabilitation, visualization and physical exercise.  It offers participants an escape and a respite from day-to-day urban life.  These full-on tactile components potentially help participants achieve something perhaps bordering on enlightenment, albeit with a tongue-in-cheek approach.

Each component continues to evolve and expand according to the specific site and socio-cultural milieu.  In discussing individual spirituality and the modern self-help phenomena, Cheung's talk will focus on two of her recent installations and presentations, "The 9th Step" and "Skill Development" - homage to John Cage musical notation.  Underlying these two components is a metaphysical subtext.

In collaboration with monks from a local temple in Doisaket, Chaing Mai, Thailand, "The 9th Step" is a mind-expanding walk and co-currently functions as a strategic game play. It is partially inspired by the 19th century poet William Wordsworth's view of a pastoral walk that generates harmony, creativity and spirituality.

"Skill Development" - homage to John Cage's 1968 musical notation is a site-specific concept for the Alternator Gallery, Artist-In-Residency program, "The Intervening City".  Participants interpret words that represent stages of self - awareness.  Musical notations are composed through malleable, tactile, everyday objects.

Judy Cheung
received a BFA degree from University of Calgary and an MFA degree from Pratt Institute, New York.  Exhibited across Canada and Asia, her on-going project, "Love is in the Air- SkyLink" (2000-present) was selected for the 9th Havana Biennial.  Her new-media teleportation portal, "freeLink", was staged at Surrey Art Gallery, Tech Lab, 2006. Cheung's work involves the continuous experimentation and investigation of perceptual reality in the realm of social and urban movements.  Installations she constructs are often interactive; rendered in a form that propels the audience into a journey.  By organizing sensory stimulating environment in public spaces, Cheung instigates situations and exchanges, inviting individuals and groups to participate in collaborative experiences while establishing their codes of social dynamic.

OurTube
is Centre A's monthly screening and talking event that's held at Centre A's lounge space on the last Wednesday night of every month after gallery hours. OurTube is a play on "YouTube". The idea behind the project is not only to broadcast your video, but also to share the experience of watching video with others and talking about it.
