[March 25]OurTube 16: Almost LIVE with Ikbal Singh & Todd A Davis
March 25, 2009
Centre A presents The 16th OurTube: Almost LIVE Wednesday, March 25th Free Admission. Everyone welcome. Voice: Roy Kiyooka (Michael de Courcy,1999), a documentation of public and private performances by interdisciplinary artist Roy Kiyooka shot over the course of a year without a script. In de Courcy's own words, the agenda was the preservation of the moment and the result was a video album, capturing what he felt to be precious and otherwise fleeting. Body Fluid (Paul Wong, 1987) is a skillful, sensual rendering of an intriguing performance by the artist, a portrayal of 1980s glamour transformed into proletarian chic. Elphantiasis Ears: Performance Documentation (Tagny Duff, 1998) recorded a public performance in Pacific Centre Mall that turns the role of security guards into performers as they discover the artist's nude body lying on the floor. Restrictions (Monty Cantsin, 1980) was originally a performance that ultimately included in a special broadcast about performance art by Radio Quebec in 1980. Through this video screening, Ikbal Singh and Todd A Davis will open up the discussion on performance art from the audience's point of view. Does performance art require an audience to be qualified as performance? Who is the audience? What happens when the audience is not aware of the performative nature of the action? What's the difference between the audience of a live performance and the audience of a performance video? Ikbal Singh curated Public Displays of Affection, the emergying artist group show for LIVE Performance Art Biennale 2007. She has performed at numerous exhibitions and events in Vancouver, including the recent "net(work): a performance art fair" at VIVO Media Arts Centre. Ikbal Singh is the name she uses when presenting her work, Ikbal Kaur Singh is her legal name, Ikbal Kaur Bassi-Sanghera Johal-Sandhu Singh is the name she is considering and Bali Singh is what they call her. Todd A Davis has worked in Vancouver since 1979 as an artist, curator, writer and administrator within, and through, many institutions. After eight years as Director and curator of Open Space, Victoria BC he returned to Vancouver to curate an exhibition titled The Performed Object: Against a Pathetic Fallacy (Helen Pitt Gallery, 2007) as part of the LIVE Performance Art Biennale 2007. He enjoys all art forms. The LIVE Biennale (formally LIVE Performance Art Biennale 1999-2007) was founded in 1999 and has located Vancouver, Canada as an important and recognized node of local, national and international performance art activity and critical study. LIVE 09 will be held from October 15 to October 31 this year in various locations. Website http://www.livebiennale.ca News http://livebiennale.blogspot.com/
