Centre A presents The 15th OurTube

For the 15th edition of Our Tube, you are warmly invited to join us for a presentation and dialogue by Environmental Youth Alliance (EYA) staff Justin Sekiguchi, Nathaniel Canuel and Sean McHugh. The evening will feature video, photography and stories from the slums of Kibera, East Africa’s largest informal settlement.
The group will talk about their experience of living and working in Nairobi, Kenya in an effort to build a waste management system in one of Africa’s poorest neighbourhoods. The trio was in Nairobi during the post election violence that erupted in late 2007 and witnessed the chaos that engulfed the country. The presentations will focus on obstacles in the international development industry, the methods that were used to successfully complete the project and stories about life in the slums. From running battles with riot police to starting up businesses with Africa’s poorest, the Vancouverites have plenty to talk about.
The Ourtube presentation at Centre A is part of the ongoing Up With Hope campaign by the EYA members to raise awareness about the life in Kenyan slums, raise funds for ongoing projects and to challenge the North American perception of Africa. Sekiguchi, Canuel and McHugh also organized a successful fundraising photo exhibit and auction last month, hosted by Centre A, that attracted more than 500 enthusiastic supporters. The Up with Hope campaign is a project implemented by the Environmental Youth Alliance (EYA). OurTube is Centre A’s monthly screening and talking event that’s held at Centre A's lounge space on the last Wednesday night of every month after gallery hours. Our Tube is a play on "YouTube". The idea behind the project is not only to broadcast your video, but also to share the experience of watching video with others and talking about it.
