2. Up with Hope, Friday, Jan 23, 6pm - 2am

In the fall of 2007, Justin Sekiguchi, Sean McHugh and Nathaniel Canuel teamed up with the Soweto Youth Group in Nairobi to tackle the challenges of unemployment and lack of proper waste management in Kibera. The result of their efforts is the Soweto Youth Group Waste Management Centre, a fully functioning waste management and recycling business run by the
impoverished youth of Kibera, Africa's largest slum.

UP WITH HOPE is now fundraising for a second term of construction. The event features a silent auction of beautiful colour photographs. Using disposable cameras, the youth of Kibera, East Africa’s largest slum, took photos of the same areas that made international headlines weeks later during the post-election violence that rocked Kenya in late 2007 and early 2008.
The awe-inspiring photos will be on sale via silent auction between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm. Local musicians Corbin Murdoch & the Nautical Miles, The Sappers, DJ Seko and Skilly will be performing throughout the night. Pay by cash or cheque. All proceeds from the event go toward building waste management centres around Nairobi.
Up with Hope was highlighted on CBC’s The National. The clip can be viewed at: http://www.cbc.ca/national/blog/special_feature/a_world_of_difference/digging_in.html.

4. A Little Distillery in Nowgong
A multimedia/interdisciplinary exhibition

Exhibition: January 30-February 28
Opening: Friday, January 30, 8pm
Performance by David H.Bateman, 9pm (free admission)

Conceptualized by Ashok Mathur (Vancouver, BC)
Artists: Brendan Tang (Ceramic pot, Kamloops, BC), Diyan Achadi (Prints and video, Vancouver, BC) and David H. Bateman (Performance and painting, Toronto)
Curator: Makiko Hara
Exhibition Patron: Joanne Louie Mah

The central tenet of A Little Distillery in Nowgong project is to develop an interdisciplinary narrative that exemplifies the transformative nature of artistic production. While one of the major generative elements will be the research and writing of a novel that, like the earlier work of Ashok Mathur, draws on postcolonial, diasporic, and globalization theories, integral to this project is a degree of interdisciplinarity that will further engage the reader/viewer through an interactive installation. By fully integrating multiple disciplines – specifically, writing, video, ceramics, printmaking, performance, and installation – this project will be disseminated through several distinct forms to function in Canada and abroad in literary and visual arts environments. The overall objective of this project will be to explore and articulate possibilities for an extensive interdisciplinary production that allows for full development of all its composite elements.
